Graduate Certificate in Higher Education - Curriculum, Teaching and Learning
The Graduate Certificate in Higher Education - Curriculum, Teaching and Learning is designed specifically for lecturers, academic managers, and academic support staff working in the Higher Education sector.
The first compulsory subject: "Higher Learning by Design: Foundations of Curriculum Design, Teaching and Learning in University and Tertiary Education" will commence on 24 July 2009. Higher Learning by Design (Foundations) is a graduate subject designed for university/tertiary-level teachers and academic support staff. Participants evaluate the explanatory power and practical applications of current theories and relevant research – from psychology, cognitive science, education and other disciplines – on effective curriculum design, teaching, and learning practice in higher/tertiary education in order to better analyse, understand, and improve their own teaching effectiveness and their students’ learning outcomes. This highly interactive, application-focused subject is offered as a series of eight workshops, during which participants experience, practice, and critique a wide variety of research-informed strategies for curriculum design, teaching, assessment and learning support.
This is the compulsory first subject in the three-subject Graduate Certificate in Higher Education. Each subject is worth 20 Credit points.
The eight workshops for this subject will be held on Fridays, 9.30am - 1.00pm on: July 24; Aug 7; Aug 21; Sept 4; Sept 18; Oct 9; Oct 16; Nov 6.

Educating the Net Generation
The publication Educating the Net Generation: A Handbook of Findings for Practice and Policy is now available to download.
The Handbook is the main outcome of the Educating the Net Generation project. It provides a set of practice and policy guidelines developed from the project findings.
Opportunities: ALTC Discipline Scholars
As part of the ALTC’s Learning Networks program, they will be appointing Discipline Scholars across the following disciplines: Law; Science, Engineering and Technology; Architecture and Building; Business, Management and Economics; Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences; Creative and Performing Arts; Health, Medicine and Veterinary Science; and Education and Human Service Professions.
The role of discipline scholars is to further the learning and teaching agenda within their discipline across Australia and internationally, as well as to publicise work already completed under ALTC-funded projects. They also investigate current and emerging trends within their field.
Ideally, candidates will be senior academics who already have strong links across their disciplines with a strong commitment to learning and teaching. Opportunities exist for the roles to be taken up in a part-time capacity.
The first three discipline scholars were appointed for the Engineering and Technology and Business, Management and Economics disciplines last month. The next four discipline groupings to be targeted are Architecture and Building; Creative and Performing Arts; Health, Medicine and Veterinary Science; and Science. Work is expected to begin in January 2010 and expressions of interest for these positions close on 2 October 2009.
More information about the program and how to submit an expression of interest can be found at: http://www.altc.edu.au/supporting-discipline-networks.
Student Engagement Website Launched
La Trobe's Student Engagement website was launched last month. The website has resources and updates about student engagement, as well as a Peer Mentoring Toolkit that can be downloaded for staff interested in setting up student peer mentoring programs.
