Grants

The main source of teaching and learning grants is the Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC). This page has an overview of the ALTC Grants Program, with links to further information. Staff wishing to apply for awards should also seek assistance from Dr Judith Lyons or Dr David Hirst, Curriculum, Teaching and Learning Centre.

ALTC Grant Program

Please note that the guidelines from ALTC have been changed for 2010 - see "Changes to the Grant Scheme 2010 Guidelines" (PDF 124KB) for further information.

The Grants Scheme has three programs. Guidelines and supporting information can be found within each of the following links:

Categories for ALTC Grant Funding

A list of the funding priorities for all programs is found below. The abbreviations show the program which address this funding priority: Leadership Program (LP), Priority Projects Program (PP); Competitive Grants Program (CG)

  • Leadership capacity building for learning and teaching (LP)
  • Curriculum Renewal (PP)
  • Assessment, standards and reporting (PP)
  • Learning and teaching spaces (PP)
  • Peer review for promotion (PP)
  • Research and development focussing on issues of emerging and continuing importance (CG)
  • Strategic approaches to learning and teaching that address the increasing diversity of the student body (CG)
  • Innovation in learning and teaching, including in relation to the role of new technologies (CG)

Program values and common criteria

The ALTC's ethos is framed by five values and principles for action. Three of these have been particularly significant in developing the guidelines for the Grants Scheme Programs:

  • Long term change
  • Diversity
  • Collaboration

While the programs are distinct in the priorities they support, the values and principles for action listed above underpin the criteria that projects must demonstrate. The following criteria are found in all three programs:

  • Project outcomes and rationale
  • Approach
  • Value/need for project
  • Project management and budget

Single Institution Projects

Although ALTC emphasises cross-institutional collaboration, they have articulated principles for funding single institution projects:

  • Case studies of an issue, an idea or approach of importance to the higher education sector
  • The work proposed should be able to be applied within other institutions
  • The project includes a comprehensive and convincing strategy to ensure outcomes and project materials take into account different institutional contexts and are able to be applied in those different contexts
  • A comprehensive plan for dissemination to the relevant audiences – sharing needs to be imbedded in the conduct of the project
