Assessment & Feedback

In higher education, assessment is the key to the curriculum. Assessment frames student learning and achievements, and significantly influences students' experience in higher education and all that they gain from it (Boud, 2010). James, McInnis and Devlin refer to the three objectives for higher education assessment:

  • Assessment guides and encourages effective approaches to learning;
  • Assessment validly and reliably measures expected learning outcomes, in particular higher-order learning that characterises higher education; and
  • Assessment and grading defines and protects academic standards.

The following effective teaching guide on assessment contains strategies and suggestions for designing assessment within the curriculum, marking and giving feedback and criterion referenced marking.
