Contemporary issues in sex and sexuality

Lecturer: Dr Gillian Fletcher

How does one design a first year elective subject to be delivered completely online to students from all faculties, and encourage student interaction and engagement? From the beginning, Contemporary Issues in Sex and Sexuality was developed to make use of the interaction possibilities that online learning technology offers, rather than developing a subject that might work face-to-face but would not ‘fit’ online.

The subject makes use of a wide range of online technologies such as a chat window, online whiteboard, a breakout room to facilitate group work, instant polling, and online voice chat. Students are required to attend six synchronised lectures, and also participate in interactive group activities embedded into sessions that include video, news reports, and external websites.
