Fair Trade

On the 10 March 2010, La Trobe University was awarded Fair Trade accreditation by the Fair Trade Association of Australia and New Zealand (FTAANZ). It was only the third Australian university to achieve this.

The University’s accreditation process was supported by staff, students and executives, emphasising a common concern at the University for the welfare of developing countries. Part of the successful accreditation meant that since 2010 La Trobe serves Fair Trade certified tea and coffee at all University functions as well as in retail outlets on all campuses.

La Trobe’s Fair Trade practice incorporates awareness to all constituents (staff, students, visitors, retailers, contractors etc.) of the University and provides an example of the University’s sense of corporate responsibility.

Fair Trade’s unique approach guarantees minimum floor prices for products and ensures buyers pay Fair Trade premiums that provide stability and security to the incomes of producers of Fair Trade products in developing countries.

Support of Fair Trade has continued with a weekly, student run Fair Trade stall, and events during Fair Trade fortnight.
