La Trobe Institute for Social and Environmental Sustainability

Roger Parish The La Trobe Institute for Social and Environmental Sustainability works across disciplines and faculties to facilitate sustainability research at La Trobe University. A great deal of research at the University is directly or indirectly related to issues of sustainability, and members of the Institute come from all faculties and many of the centres of the University.

It is becoming more common for investigators on a single project to come from more than one disciplinary perspective. The Institute aims to encourage and support social, environmental and economic sustainability research.

The Institute has three overlapping research themes that reflect the strengths of research at La Trobe University:

  • water, natural sciences and land management
  • community resilience, health and social justice
  • sustainability governance, measurement and corporate social responsibility.
We can provide members of the Institute with:
  • information and encouragement on initiatives and scholarly activities related to sustainability
  • support in their responses to opportunities for collaborative research across disciplines and faculties,
  • and with our current and future research partners
  • writing and budget drafting assistance in applying for research funding from government, commercial and philanthropic sources
  • targeted desktop research, such as small literature reviews on sustainability topics
  • links with the Office of the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Sustainability) and other University units, such as Research Services.

Membership is open to University staff and postgraduate students on request — please contact us via email if you wish to discuss becoming a member of the Institute.

The Director of the Institute may invite persons approved by the Vice-Chancellor to be honorary members of the Institute.
