A new study environment

University is very different to school in many ways, and the transition can be a bit daunting, especially if your child went to a small secondary school.

At La Trobe we strive to provide a friendly and supportive community, and to help new students adjust smoothly to the challenges they face. Here are a few tips to help with the process:

  • Ensure your child visits the campus where they intend to study. La Trobe offers many events that give secondary students a taste of university life. This will help them get a feel for the university, and help them decide whether they'd feel comfortable studying and/or living at the campus.
  • Encourage them to see new experiences as opportunities and challenges rather than problems. University encourages students to learn to deal with life on their own, and a positive attitude is a great asset when they start out.
  • It's good, too, to keep in mind that being at university is not just about studying it's also about social, cultural and sporting life, making new friends and trying new things. Your child will make the most of their time at university if they get involved in the things they love doing, as well working on their studies.
  • Whenever your child does need a helping hand, they can easily access our excellent student support services.
