Fees and Finance

La Trobe University offers both Commonwealth Supported and Fee-paying places in Undergraduate courses.

Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP)

What were formerly known as HECS places are now called Commonwealth Supported Places. CSP places are available to Australian citizens, NZ citizens and permanent residents. As a Commonwealth-supported student, the Government will contribute towards your study load, and you will be required to pay a "Student Contribution". The Contribution amount is determined by the University, and depends on your units of study within a Band. The band fees shown below are based on a full-time study load. Pro-rata fees apply to students taking part-time or overloaded studies.

Paying your Student Contribution

If you are an Australian citizen or hold a permanent humanitarian visa you can:

  • defer the amount by using HECS-Help, which will be repaid through your taxes when your income reaches government-set thresholds. HECS-Help is available for a period of 7 years of equivalent full-time study. OR
  • pay the full amount up-front, pay 80% of the total student contribution, or make a Partial Payment ($500 or more) and receive a 20% discount on the amount paid.

New Zealand citizens and permanent residents (other than an Australian permanent humanitarian visa) must pay the student contribution up-front without discount each semester.

Fee-Paying Places

La Trobe University offers fee-paying places in courses across Faculties.

Students who enrol in a fee-paying (non-CSP) course must:

  • pay the full tuition fees, as they apply each semester, as the Government does not contribute to the cost of that course.
  • may be eligible for a FEE-Help loan to help pay their tuition fees (Australian citizens and permanent humanitarian visa holders only).

FEE-HELP

FEE-help is a loan available to Australian citizens and permanent humanitarian visa holders to help pay part or all of their fee-paying tuition fees. The amount available is indexed every year. In 2007 the limit will be 80,000. Students repay their loan through the tax system once their income is above the minimum threshold for compulsory repayment.
