Study Abroad at La Trobe

Do a semester or a year of study at La Trobe for credit towards your home degree, including Masters by Research and PhD. You defer from your home university for the time you intend to study at La Trobe and pay international Study Abroad fees.

Apply

Before you apply, read the information on the academic and English language requirements you need to meet.

Apply online

Go to the online application.
(An Online Application User Guide is available from your home university Study Abroad Coordinator.)

  1. Register for a username and password
  2. Lodge your 'Study abroad' application online
  3. Upload ALL of the following documents.

Documents:

  • One academic reference form
  • Personal statement: one page about why you would like to study on exchange at La Trobe University
  • Official academic transcript from your home university
  • For students from a non-English speaking countries: evidence of meeting La Trobe's English language requirements.

We won't assess incomplete applications, so please make sure you complete the application and 'lodge' it. All original certified copies will need to be forwarded by mail.

Download a Study Abroad application form (PDF 1.1MB), complete all sections and email, fax or post to the La Trobe Abroad office with all the following attachments.

Timeline for applications

We receive applications any time, so long as you leave enough time to arrange your visas and give us 2–3 weeks to process your application.

If you want to apply for a Study Abroad Ambassador scholarship, we must receive your main application at least one month before the scholarship deadline.

Approval

Your application will be sent to the department/s of your choice for approval. This may take some time so please remain patient.

Receiving an offer

Depending on the success of your application, you will either receive a firm Letter of Offer or a Letter of Offer with attached conditions. The conditions may be that you are required to choose other units or are required to complete an English Language unit upon arrival to La Trobe.

Accepting your offer

When the offer has been finalised, you will be sent Offer Acceptance Forms including information on Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC). All forms need to be filled out and returned to La Trobe Abroad. We will then send you an electronic confirmation of enrolment which you can use to apply for a student visa.

Once you have accepted your offer, we will send you a My Life at La Trobe Guide [PDF 2.69MB], which provides valuable information regarding our free airport reception service, accommodation and more.

Coming to Australia

Important dates

General semester and orientation dates can be found in our Academic Calendar.

We recommend that you arrive in time for our Orientation for international students. This program contains important information sessions, including enrolment assistance, and is also an excellent opportunity for you to meet other students and staff.

We organise additional social events for exchange and study abroad students including a pre-orientation trip that takes place usually during the weekend before Orientation. Information about the pre-orientation trip is sent to accepted students.

Costs

Tuition fees for a full time study load

The La Trobe University Study Abroad tuition fee for a full time study load is:

  • one semester - 2014 - A$8,500*
  • one academic year (two semesters) - 2014 - A$17,000*

*Fees are subject to change.

Other costs

Other costs to consider include the cost of living and Overseas Student Health Cover fees. You may also like to find out about banking and the possibility of gaining permission to work while in Australia.

Scholarships

Can you creatively describe the ways you plan to share your La Trobe Study Abroad experience when you return home? If you are also a high-achieving student, you can apply for one of our prestigious La Trobe University Study Abroad Ambassador Scholarships. We award ten scholarships each year to students from around the world.

Successful students do special events during their Study Abroad semester, including cultural outings and networking opportunities. We expect that scholarship recipients will act as ambassadors for La Trobe University after returning home.

Scholarships include an A$1000 grant per student.

The form details what information is required. We won't process incomplete applications.

We will notify you by email of the outcome after two to three weeks. If you are successful, scholarships can be transferred electronically to your bank account after arrival and enrolment.

Eligibility

This scholarship is only available to incoming fee paying Study Abroad students for the semester noted in the application.
