ADMISSION

Applicants for La Trobe University courses apply as

  • Normal Entry applicants; or via
  • Special Entry Access Schemes (SEAS)
Normal Entry - Application via VTAC
  • Normal entry applicants are Australian or New Zealand citizens or permanent Australian residents and:
  • Are current Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) students; or
  • Are current International Baccalaureate students; or
  • Are current interstate Year 12 students; or
  • Have previously satisfactorily completed the VCE or its equivalent; or

Any qualifications recognised by VTAC as equivalent to the VCE or awarded a statement of equivalency from the Victorian Board of Studies meet the normal entry requirement.

You can find further information on minimum tertiary entrance requirements in the Entrance Requirements section of the 2009 VTAC Guide, or on the VTAC website.

Special Entry Access Schemes (SEAS) - Application via VTAC

Special Entry Access Schemes (SEAS) is the VTAC umbrella program for all special entry schemes conducted by participating tertiary institutions in Victoria. There are two distinct and separate SEAS schemes provided: SEAS-Access and Equity Schemes and SEAS-Special Year 12 Consideration.

SEAS - Access and Equity Special Entry Access Scheme Requirements (SEAS)

Category 1: Mature Age Entry
Category 2: Non-English Speaking Background
Category 3: Recognition as an Indigenous Australian
Category 4: Difficult Family Circumstances
Category 5: Disadvantaged Socio-Economic Background
Category 6: Rural or Regional Disadvantage
Category 10: Disability or Long-term Medical Condition

SEAS - Special Year 12 Consideration

Assists current Year 12 students who have experienced circumstances that can be demonstrated to have had a negative impact on their performance during their final year.

SEAS Further Information

Elibibility criteria and application process information for all of La Trobe's equity and access schemes is published in the Special Entry Access Schemes booklet available from VTAC.

English Language Proficiency Requirement

Any person offered a place at La Trobe University may be required to sit an English language test. An applicant found to be below the necessary standard may be required to undertake a remedial English language course conducted in the University concurrently with their undergraduate course, or may have their provisional offer withdrawn.

Applicants whose main language of educational instruction was other than English must provide evidence of their proficiency in English. This is achieved by a satisfactory result in VCE English (any) or in an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) or another test acceptable to the University.

For further information telephone (03) 9479 1199. Applicants with IELTS or other test results should submit them directly to VTAC with their application. Applications may not be considered until results have been provided.

Extra Requirements

In addition to meeting the University's normal entry or special entry requirements, you must satisfy any special requirements of the specific course(s). These may include prerequisite studies in the VCE, folio presentation, interview, written submission, or supplementary information (see individual course descriptions). Applicants who do not satisfy the relevant extra requirements may not gain selection, despite high academic achievement.

If you're required to attend an interview or supply any additional information, you'll need to demonstrate a range of attributes - such as personal motivation, relevant experience or previous study - and an understanding of the course and potential employment opportunities.

If you're required to submit a folio of artwork, you should present the work you feel best represents your ideas and abilities, and which shows originality, innovation, imagination, experimentation, as well as competence in the basic skills of the course to which you're applying. Contact the Future Students Centre on 1300 135 045 (Melbourne - Bundoora) or 1300 138 058 (Bendigo) for further information.

Clinical and Professional Placements

Some courses offered require students to undertake clinical and professional placements. In courses where students are required to undertake such placements, they may come into contact with vulnerable people. Most agencies where placements are taken require students to provide a National Police Security Check. Applicants concerned about this should consult the relevant Selection Officer before applying.

Furthermore, many Health Sciences courses require students to undertake placements in hospitals. Most hospital settings require students to be immunised against a variety of diseases. We therefore strongly recommend that successful applicants in courses requiring hospital placements seek immunisation against diseases including hepatitis, rubella, measles and mumps prior to commencing their course. Contact the relevant Selection Officer for further information.

SELECTION

Selection of qualified applicants is generally based on academic performance in Year 12 studies unless there are other relevant factors, which may include study at tertiary level (whether complete or incomplete) or consideration of special skills and other experience.

Full details of the selection procedures, including the two-stage process and middle-band selection, are published in the current VTAC Guide.

Equivalent National Tertiary Entrance Rank (ENTER)

VCE students:

VTAC calculates an ENTER for all VCE students who have successfully completed the VCE and satisfied minimum tertiary entrance requirements. Only applicants who have at least four VCE study scores in an acceptable combination will have an ENTER.

Interstate Year 12 students:

Interstate Year 12 results (except Queensland) provide you with either a TER or UAI, which is the equivalent of a Victorian ENTER. Queensland uses a ranking system (OP) which is not equivalent to the ENTER. A conversion table for the Queensland OP is available. VTAC receives your results and ranks from your state admissions centre/authority and forwards them onto your course preferences.

For further information the ENTER scores and Notional ENTER please refer to VTAC

Rural and Regional Student Access Scheme

The purpose of the Rural and Regional Students Access Scheme is to encourage students who have completed their VCE (or HSC in NSW) at a rural/regional school to take up tertiary studies at one of our regional campuses. This scheme replaces the 'Regional Bonus Scheme' of previous years.

Students from an eligible school who make an admission application through VTAC or UAC to any undergraduate course at any of La Trobe's regional campuses will be automatically considered. There are no extra application forms to complete.

The Rural and Regional Student Access Scheme provides an automatic three ENTER points bonus which will be applied to applicants within the middle band.

A list of eligible schools in Victoria and NSW can be found at our Access La Trobe website.

Students with disabilities, mental health issues or ongoing medical conditions

La Trobe welcomes students with a disability. The Equity and Access Unit can provide information and support to people with a disability, mental health issue or ongoing medical condition. Prospective students are advised to contact the relevant Disability Liaison Officer:

In addition, each of the University's campuses has a disability contact person you can reach via the main reception at that campus.

Accessible accommodation for people with disabilities is available at Menzies College and Glenn College, at Melbourne (Bundoora) campus. Telephone (03) 9479 1071 and (03) 9479 5100 respectively.

Please note: applicants to La Trobe University should ensure that they are aware of the physical components and location requirements of all courses to which they wish to apply. If you have a disability, medical condition or other concerns which may affect your potential participation, you should contact the relevant School to discuss any possible course modifications.

Grade Point Average

Courses which list Grade Point Average (GPA) in the selection mode for non-year 12 applicants consider GPAs in combination with the other selection criteria listed in the course entry. You may obtain a statement of your GPA through VTAC.

Advanced Standing (Credit for previous study)

Each Faculty has different policies regarding the number and type of units (subjects) and any work experience it is willing to accept for credit purposes. You should apply for credit after you've been offered a place - at the time of enrolment.

Applicants who have completed a TAFE course may be eligible to apply for entry into related degree courses with a significant level of credit through the La Trobe-TAFE Pathways program (PDF 1.42Mb). For example, students who have satisfactorily completed the Diploma of Hospitality Management may be granted up to eight units credit when enrolling in the Bachelor of Business (Tourism and Hospitality).

For applicants with partial university studies, completion of individual units can lead to credit(s), determined on an individual basis which takes into account the units already completed and those required in the La Trobe University course. Contact the relevant Faculty or Course Adviser for further information.
