Subject outline

In this subject students gain an understanding of the theoretical basis for, and the clinical practice of, prosthetic and orthotic management of the upper limb. This subject is designed to develop students' understanding of upper limb including applied anatomy, pathomechanics & an introduction to a range of upper limb specific pathologies. The curriculum focuses on developing clinical skills necessary to provide services to persons with upper limb loss or weakness including: undertaking a detailed assessment of the client, develop a well evidenced prescription that meets the client's needs & undertake accurate measurement, casting, fabrication, fitting & adjustment of common upper limb prostheses and/or orthoses. Students will work closely with a variety of clients with upper limb deficiency to further develop their communication skills & ability to establish good working relationships. Students gain practical experience in the application of prostheses & orthoses for the upper limb.

01. ) Demonstrate an understanding of the aetiology, interdisciplinary rehabilitation practices and outcomes as related to deficits of the upper limb a. Identify common causes and incidence of upper limb loss or deficit, including traumatic, systemic and pathological sequalae b. Identify common types of upper limb deficiencies and or pathologies including an appreciation of the anatomical structures affected d. Demonstrate an understanding of the team approach to rehabilitation including the roles of various clinicians and the multidisciplinary approach to training for ADLs

02. ) Conduct a safe clinical assessment and analyse findings from subjective and objective evaluations to determine clinical outcomes possible for a person with an upper limb pathology a. Conduct a subjective examination of a person with an upper limb pathology and in doing so demonstrate good interpersonal and communication skills b. Perform a safe, detailed objective examination of a person with an upper limb pathology c. Record and articulate relevant clinical findings from the clinical assessment of a person with an upper limb pathology d. Clearly define and articulate possible clinical outcomes for a person with an upper limb pathology

Client assessment for orthotic and/or prosthetic device fitting.

03. ) Prescribe a prosthesis or orthosis to meet the treatment objectives for a given upper limb pathology and in doing so, articulate a strong and well evidenced rationale to justify the prescription a. Identify the goals of treatment for a range of pathologies affecting the upper limb b. Compare the relative advantages and disadvantages of various devices to meet these treatment goals for a variety of upper limb pathologies c. Prescribe devices to manage the treatment objectives for a range of common upper limb pathologies

04. ) Measure, fit, adjust and evaluate devices to manage uppr limb deficiencies and/or pathologies to achieve a comfortable and functional outcome. a. Develop and follow a logical sequence of steps to fit, adjust and/or align an upper limb prosthesis or orthosis in a timely way. b. Evaluate the fit and function of the the various components of the prosthesis or orthosis and identify problems. c. Undertake a range of adjustments to the various components of an upper limb prosthesis or orthosis to resolve problems that enhance comfort and function.

Fitting and functional analysis of prosthetic and/or orthotic device.

05. ) Communicate to an audience of peers a justification for use of a prosthesis or orthosis to manage any of a number of common pathologies affecting the upper limb for a given client a. Write a clinical referral for adjunct therapy that demonstrates an ability write for a professional audience, synthesise information from various sources of professional literature (e.g., journal articles and texts) and develop a logical train of thought for a given topic related to management of the upper limb. b. Communicate a referral for other treatment interventions, e.g.,occupational therapy where appropriate
