Subject outline

In this subject, students will develop the skills to become critical consumers of research in prosthetics and orthotics. Through both independent and facilitated learning, students will develop the ability to apply their prior learning of: common research designs, different types of data and measurement scales, statistical tests and interpreting data from graphs and tables to critique contemporary research in prosthetics and orthotics and make informed judgments about its value and usefulness in clinical practice. Students will also learn to synthesise and communicate the findings of research to  through production of an evidence note and infographic. By developing critical consumers of prosthetics and orthotics research, clinicians will be able to fulfill their responsibilities as providers of evidence based prosthetic and orthotic care as well as communicate research evidence effectively to a range of stakeholders.

Evidence note and data extraction spreadsheet (1250 word equivalent)Students prepare a two-page 'evidence note'; a short professional communication that summarises the research evidence on a particular topic. Infographic (1000 word equivalent)Students design a one-page #infographic# for a prescribed audience (e.g., parents). Infographics use a combination of words, pictures, icons or graphics to communicate the salient point in a way that makes complex information easily accessible and as such, they are an increasingly common way for research evidence to be translated.25 01, 02, 03
