PRACTICE AND ADVANCED COUNSELLING (PATIENT CENTERED CARE)

Many factors in a person's life can affect their health and the way they approach their healthcare. An important element of pharmaceutical care is to take these factors and the person's level of health literacy into account when dealing with them as a patient. This requires pharmacists to change their approach to a patient accordingly. Students will learn about heath literacy, what factors can affect health and health care, global influences on healthcare and the communication skills to respond appropriately. Healthcare provisions will be examined in the local and global context with skills developed around health, emotional and cultural literacy to enable students to understand the range of sociological issues that may be encountered when practicing as a pharmacist. Topics covered include health and emotional literacy, conflict, ethics, privacy and consent, mental health, abuse, addiction, loss and grief, sexuality, global healthcare perspectives and cultural and religious diversity.

- Seminars from expert speakers include cultural and religious diversity, with follow-up online reflection. Aged care facility placement provides opportunities to engage with community groups.

|Weekly quiz based on pre-reading (equiv 1000 words)||For weeks 2-11 there will be four multiple choice quiz questions on LMS based on the required pre-reading for the seminar topic. Each quiz is worth a total of 1.5% and to get the mark the students must get all four questions correct.||15||02, 03, 04|
|Oral case scenario assessment (equiv. 1500 words)||This oral assessment occurs in conjunction with the oral assessment for PHA4PCB. But is marked seperately. The assessment will involve two 10 minute role plays based on a clinical problem covered in PHA4PCB with a communication issue/component incorporated from the material covered in seminars and from the guided learning for PHA4PAC.||35||02, 03, 04|
