Subject outline

Healthcare organisations are dynamic and challenging environments regardless of setting or level of nursing staff responsibility, therefore the subject focuses on leadership development for nurses in management/senior positions. Recognising the importance of involving all nursing staff in leadership and management development, rather than concentrating on the development of individual nursing leaders or managers. Major theoretical frameworks of leadership and management are introduced, alongside a consideration of the different types of organisations and organisational structures. Students are encouraged to assess their own leadership strengths and development needs, and to use their assessments to develop their own individual leadership development frameworks. This subject is divided into five modules.
