Subject outline

Writing for Media introduces students to the practice of professional writing for various media platforms. The focus of the subject will be to teach students how to write short form news articles for print (newspapers and online news sites), radio and television news.

01. Demonstrate a comprehension of the pre tutorial stimuli such as readings and videos.

Activities:
Quiz held weekly between weeks 2-11.

02. Demonstrate an understanding of the key fundamentals of professional writing such as correct grammar, punctuation and attribution.

Online test to be held in class on first four weeks curriculum.

03. Students will demonstrate an ability to re-order information delivered in a press conference environment in order of importance and then write a short news story in print form using the inverted pyramid method. Student will be exposed to working under time pressure.

Activities:
Students will attend or watch online in class a press conference and submit a bullet point list of information considered important for a subsequent story in a set time period. The student will then write a print story based on their bullet point list as an out of class task.

The student will then write stories suitable for print, radio and TV based on their bullet point list as an out of class task.
