Subject outline

In this subject students are provided with a general overview of the Key Learning Area (KLA) of Physical Education (PE). PE is a complex learning area and this subject reflects the variability and complexity in the KLA as it is represented and experienced in the Australian context. Rather than present just one dominant account of the learning area, this subject presents a balanced account of the various educational rationales that exist for movement in education. Consequently to get a solid understanding of contemporary movement education it will be necessary to gain an appreciation of the historical and philosophical foundations of sport and PE from its origins in ancient Greece, through to the impact of science and the concept of health has had on the theoretical and professional development of PE as an educational process in the Twenty-First Century.
