Subject outline

This subject provides students who have already met the English prerequisites for enrolment with an opportunity to further develop their English academic skills. This is NOT a subject about how to teach English as an additional language. Rather, it is an interdisciplinary elective for students from language backgrounds other than English and a core subject for bridging students within the School of Education. The theoretical component analyses academic discourse in intercultural contexts and explores the cultural values that shape these forms of communication. The practical component includes essay writing using English patterns of expression with explicit argument and evidence. Issues of academic integrity and plagiarism are also addressed with a focus on improving referencing skills. Students are encouraged to contribute to class and small group discussions in ways that focus on understanding aspects of intercultural communication and development of the student's competence in this area.
