Subject outline

This subject further develops and adds to the tools and techniques introduced in CSE1IS: Information Systems. Major topics include information systems development strategies, project management, requirements modelling, domain modelling, behavioural modelling, structural modelling and dynamic modelling. The students will learn the use of Unified Modelling Language (UML) for the analysis and design phases of IS.  Students will gain the ability to apply knowledge of basic science and software engineering fundamentals to information systems analysis and design.

01. Compare and contrast information systems development strategies.

Activities:
Workshop/Tutorials/Exam Describe and explain the similarities and differences between the various systems development methods. Explain the advantages and disadvantages of one or more system development methods.

02. Analyse an information systems project and apply project management tools and techniques to planning and scheduling.

Activities:
Workshop/Tutorials/Assignment/Exam Solve problems that require identification and use of an appropriate cost benefit analysis technique to identify whether it is feasible financially to proceed with a systems development project. Develop Gantt and PERT charts and use time estimation techniques for planning, sheduling and tracking of systems development projects. Use project management software (e.g. MS Project or similar software) for the planning and status reporting of system development progress. Demonstrate team working skills and reflect on self and peer performance in the team.

03. Identify system requirements and document using use cases.

Activities:
Workshop/Tutorials/Assignment/Exam Develop use cases from case study user/systems analyst transcripts. Use a CASE tool (e.g. Enterprise Architect or similar software) to specify requirements, draw use case diagrams and write use case scenarios.

04. Develop and describe a domain model.

Activities:
Workshop/Tutorials/Assignment/Exam Identify and analyse domain classes needed in an IS. Read, interpret and create a domain model class diagram.
