Subject outline

This subject provides a broad range of visual arts students with a critical and theoretical context in which to situate their studio practice. Building on existing knowledge and skills, students will be expected to articulate basic relationships between critical and contextual areas and their own studio practice. Students will be exposed to a range of texts including art historical, cultural, theoretical and philosophical as well as artists writing, they will analyse in depth these texts and the associated key theoretical paradigms and understand how they relate to the production and display of contemporary art. Students will understand basic issues in the complex relationships between theory and practice. Students will be taught the basics of academic scholarly research and how they apply to the study of visual arts. Students will develop skills in analysis and communication (reading, writing, discussing) that will enable them to understand and process complex ideas.
