Subject outline

In this subject students are provided with the opportunity of integrating knowledge, values and skills gained in previous years and applying these to social issues which are the concerns addressed in social work. Students are expected to be able to demonstrate their understanding of the purpose of social work through the application of the concepts, theories, values and skills presented in the course. They are also expected as part of this process to demonstrate their ability to critically reflect on their practice.

Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes

01. Demonstrate an ability to integrate theory and practice and to synthesize complex material by critically anlayisng a social issue and the implications for practice as social workers across all social work domains

Activities:
Assessments1 requires students to reserach and present information about a social issue. Assessment 2 builds on this and asks the students to plan an advocacy approach that can address the issue. This includes providing a critical reflection on the role of social work in advocacy.

02. Define Social Work conceptually and apply the definitiion in practice

Activities:
Assessment 2 requires students to demonstrate an understanding of social work and advocacy practice.

03. Critically analyse a human serivce organisation with a particular focus on its response to the identified social issues.

Activities:
Assessment 1 requires students to demonstrate an understanding of an organisations client group and the individual and social issues facing this client group. Assessment 2 requires students to think further about possible responses, including the agency's responses, to address the issues facing the client group.
