Subject outline
In this subject students will complete 200 hours of clinical placement based at a mental health or other health care setting in the community under the supervision of an onsite clinical practitioner. This placement is the first of three over the course of Master of Art Therapy and designed to meet the registration requirements of the Australian and New Zealand Arts Therapy Association (ANZATA). Students will undertake a period of orientation, develop an entry level art therapy case load and experience clinical supervision. They will have an entry level experience of being a member of a clinical team and will be expected to enter case notes, and as appropriate to educate placement colleagues about art therapy via, for example, a presentation.

Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes
01. Employ a variety of art therapy and interpersonal skills to develop therapeutic relationships with potential clients.
- Activities:
- Plan of art-based activities appropriate for placement setting as 'taster' experiences.
02. Develop a caseload of art therapy clients in collaboration with fellow clinicians.
- Activities:
- Ability to document the system of referral.
03. Prepare for and actively engage in clinical supervision with on-site clincal supervisor.
- Activities:
- Documented preparation for placement supervision sessions.
04. Participate as an entry-level art therapy trainee within a clinical team such as in case meetings, in treatment planning and related activities.
- Activities:
- Attendance at clinical meetings and documentation of occasions, or cases where an art therapy could be included in a client's treatment regime.
05. Documented case notes according to the norms of the placement site which describe session planning and therapy outcomes.
- Activities:
- Systematically written case notes from client work, identifying assessment, treatment and outcomes.
06. Communicate the aims and pratice of art therapy as relevant to the placement setting.
- Activities:
- Presentation to staff on the role of art therapy.
