Subject outline

The focus of this subject is the design, management, extraction and integration of health data. Students will gain practical skills in developing and maintaining fully relational health databases and in using national health data standards and models. Specialised products and report-writing packages applicable to the health field, specifically Microsoft Access and Microsoft Excel, will be taught. Theoretical and logical principles of health database and system administration will be introduced, including data warehousing and linkage and the application of metadata for healthcare client and provider identification. The subject enables students to identify significant institutions and stakeholders in the health IT industry and introduces them to new directions in health informatics.
