Subject outline

This subject will broaden and deepen your knowledge of contemporary family therapy and relevant theoretical concepts in order to enhance your conceptualization of family difficulties and planning for intervention. The topics include foundational family therapy frameworks, theories of change, diversity and other practice issues. This subject is offered in a blended learning format including online lectures, panel discussions, audio visual resources, guided reading, online student forum and face to face skills development workshops. Assessment will include a Structured learning journal and a Family work review.

Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes

01. Analyse family difficulties within a number of distinct systemic theoretical frameworks and evaluate the appropriateness of these frameworks in terms of effectiveness and ethical practice.

Activities:
Readings, lectures, interviews, videos on systemic theories and family therapy. Online forum discussion and facilitator panel discussion. Case reviews written and presented. Personal reflection and journaling.

02. Integrate a range of specific family therapy skills with current therapy techniques according to the specific and unique needs of each client family in combination with the workers role with them.

Activities:
Readings, lectures, interviews, videos on family therapy skills and practice (ie. conceptualization of presenting difficulties, engagement, therapeutic questioning, systemic intervention strategies).Online & face to face workshops focussed on family therapy skill development. Online forum discussion and facilitator panel discussion. Case reviews written and presented. Personal reflection and journaling.

03. Evaluate and revise family therapy concepts and practices in general, and in terms of the student#s own practice in relation to sensitivity, competence and ethics in working with cultural and other diversity issues.

Activities:
Readings & lectures on the impact of various forms of diversity (including race and culture, gender, sexuality, age, social class and differing levels of ability) on families and therapeutic work. Online forum discussion and facilitator panel discussion. Case reviews written and presented. Personal reflection and journaling.

04. Integrate the skills, perspectives and knowledge covered in this subject with a collaborative approach to develop an appropriate systemic assessment as the basis for effective intervention.

Activities:
Reading, lectures, videos on the conceptualization of presenting issues, engagement, assessment, therapeutic process and intervention with families (ie. questioning to elicit factors important for determining the most useful therapeutic approach).. Online forum discussion and facilitator panel discussion. Case reviews written and presented. Personal reflection and journaling.
