NETWORK DESIGN EXERCISE

ELE5NDE

2016

Credit points: 30

Subject outline

A number of network design scenarios will be simulated using Opnet design software by students undertaking this subject. Scenarios are designed to help students understand the concepts of planning and design of communication networks. The scenarios start with a single site with a single local area network (LAN) and progress through to complex WAN configurations. The simulations will be run under controlled conditions, i.e. with specific data and collision rates. This will help the students relate the simulated results to the theoretical expectations. Students will finally build hardware implementations of their networks with ISDN and TCP/IP networks.

Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes

01. Describe the fundamentals and applications of various network technologies.

Activities:
Lectures equip students with fundamentals of the technologies used in that week's lab. Lab exercises quires student understanding.

02. Characterise network hardware and traffic flows

Activities:
Labs use packet capture software to instruct students on characterising real traffic flows and underlying networks

03. Analyse the basics of modeling and the limitations of a simulation environment.

Activities:
Lab exercises demonstrates the differences between the results obtained from a discrete event simulation and that of real world

04. Apply modeling tools in the design/analysis/R&D of a computer network.

Activities:
Students are given a real world scenario as design exercise which requires application of skills aquired in the labs

05. Create custom models that address the design challenges at hand

Activities:
Students when dealing with real world scenarios have to model their own application models to model traffic generations and at times model their own network technologies and protocols to successfully complete the design exercise.

06. Identify and negotiate tasks which are parts of a project to be a successful team player.

Activities:
Students work in teams and assign different tasks based on individual's expertise in a particular skill such as coding, data collection, data analysis, pricing etc
