SIGNAL PROCESSING AND CONTROL

ELE5FPC

2016

Credit points: 15

Subject outline

In this subject, students are introduced to digital signal processing (DSP) and linear control systems. Students first study necessary analytical DSP and control systems skills including Fourier analysis, linear systems z-transform, Laplace transform, stability analysis, state-space techniques and frequency response methods. Then they apply these skills to a range of real world problems such as removing noise from audio, speech and digital images and the analysis of characteristics and performance of feedback control systems. The DSP element of this subject is an excellent preparation for a career in multimedia processing while the study of linear control systems develops essential engineering skills to analyze and design physical systems.

Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes

01. Apply the necessary analytical tools to analyse and design digital filters and control systems using Fourier analysis, linear systems z-transform and Laplace transform.

Activities:
Lectures 2-7 are on the design of digital filters. Lectures 9-20 are on the design of control systems. Assignments (1-3) and labs (1-3) are designed for students to simulate practical systems and reinforce the knowledge.
Related graduate capabilities and elements:
Inquiry/ Research(Inquiry/ Research)
Quantitative Literacy/ Numeracy(Quantitative Literacy/ Numeracy)
Critical Thinking(Critical Thinking)
Creative Problem-solving(Creative Problem-solving)

02. Write a clear, concise and well-structured lab/assignment report, focusing on problem solving techniques used to solve the real world problems.

Activities:
Detailed examples will be discussed in lectures. Assignments questions and simulations in labs help students solve practical problems.
Related graduate capabilities and elements:
Creative Problem-solving(Creative Problem-solving)
Writing(Writing)
Discipline-specific GCs(Discipline-specific GCs)

03. Write matlab code to design digital recursive and non-recursive filters, analyse characteristics and performance of feedback control systems and measure frequency responses of digital filters.

Activities:
Detailed Matlab code will be discussed in lectures and Matlab will be to solve assignment questions and perform simulations in the lab.
Related graduate capabilities and elements:
Discipline-specific GCs(Discipline-specific GCs)

04. Perform a literature review and write an essay to demonstrate a deeper understanding of a fundamental concept in digital signal processing

Activities:
Essay topics and literature sources will be discussed in lectures. An example of what is expected will also be presented and discussed in lectures.
Related graduate capabilities and elements:
