Contribute to a respectful environment

Respect is one of the core values of the University. You can contribute to a safe, inclusive, respectful and caring environment at La Trobe.

Respect at La Trobe

We have a long and proud tradition of being one of the country's most diverse and inclusive universities. We value diversity and are determined to harness difference as a driving force for innovation. We strive to offer a caring, connected environment, where people respect one another and their differences. Our Future Ready Strategy outlines these goals.

Contribute to a respectful environment

Everyone, staff, students and industry partners, is responsible for creating and fostering a respectful community where everybody feels safe, supported and can actively contribute and participate to their full potential. This requires all of us to actively role model and champion respectful behaviours.

"The standard you walk past is the standard you set" (David Morrison, Australian of the Year and former Chief of Army)

There are many ways you can contribute to a safe, inclusive and respectful environment:

  • Respect diversity of opinions and value everyone's contribution
  • Treat others with courtesy and respect at all times.
  • Take the time and make the effort to communicate with and deepen your understanding of people from different racial and religious backgrounds.
  • Listen respectfully
  • Role model behaviours which foster a safe inclusive, respectful and caring environment
  • Challenge behaviours which are not respectful in a respectful manner.

Students rights and responsibilities

As a student joining the University, you have a number of rights and responsibilities, which were developed in consultation with students. Respect is central in both your rights and responsibilities as a student:

  • you have the right to be treated with dignity and respect within the University community
  • you are responsible for being respectful of other's rights, and ensuring that you actively foster and support an environment that is safe and free from harassment and discrimination for all.

Staff workplace entitlements and behaviour expectations

We are committed to developing a culture with an engaged, resilient workforce: connected, innovative, accountable and caring. The Workplace Behaviours Policy clearly outlines the University's commitment to providing an environment free from unacceptable behaviours and outlines workplace entitlements and expectations of all staff.
