University Games 2009
La Trobe University Bags 13 medals at the Australian University Games.
A record of 7003 students from 44 different universities have participated in the 2009 Australian University Games (AUG), which successfully concluded last Friday with participants saying it has been the best Games ever” CEO of Australian University Sport (AUS), Mr Don Knapp.
La Trobe again fielded a strong team of students who participated in what is now the premier University sporting event in Australia – the Australian University Games, which was held on the Gold Coast from 28 September to 2 October.
La Trobe students from campuses all around Victoria were invited and selected to represent the University in 14 different sports and competing against 43 Universities from around Australia and despite the enormous cost to get to the Gold Coats, 194 students managed to make the trip.
In 2008, the Games were held in Melbourne and La Trobe, with a team of 270 students, managed to bring home 10 medals, the best performance ever by a La Trobe team at the Games. However, despite a smaller team participating in the Games this year due to the enormous cost, we managed to win 13 medals, 3 better than 2008 and equal number selection in Green and Gold (All Australian Representative team) from the previous year.
This is an outstanding sporting achievement and a clear indication that students from La Trobe have the talent and the enthusiasm to ‘take on’ the ‘sandstone’ universities from around Australia.
