Legal assistance is free, confidential and available to currently enrolled students.
The La Trobe Student Legal Service is a partnership between La Trobe University and West Heidelberg Community Legal – a service of Banyule Community Health.
The service provides free and confidential legal help to students enrolled at La Trobe University across all campuses.
What type of legal help does the Student Legal Service provide?
We provide:
- Free legal advice and information on most legal issues that students may have;
- Case work and limited representation (dependent on resources and capacity); and
- Appropriate referrals to other services.
Some of the legal issues we can help with include:
- Renting / Housing – renting, issues with landlords, bond, bills and moving out
- Fines and Infringements – parking, speeding, public transport and all types of fines. Options to pay, challenge or consolidate fines
- Employment – rates of pay, conditions, rights at work and when you leave
- Centrelink payments – entitlements, complaints, reviews of Centrelink decisions or debt
- Consumer complaints
- Safety and crime
- Intervention orders, victims of crime
- Family Violence
- Family Law
- Minor Criminal Matters
- Motor Vehicle accidents (not TAC) and insurance disputes.

Telephone advice appointments are offered Wednesday - Friday between 10.00 am–4:00 pm.
You can request a legal advice appointment by clicking the button below or emailing our Student Legal Service team.
Alternatively, drop-in at our clinic at the Health and Wellbeing Centre between 10am - 4pm on a Thursday for free legal advice. No appointment necessary.

Students can contact the Student Legal Service at any stage for advice, however, seeking legal advice early can prevent your issue from becoming more serious.
The legal advice provided to you is confidential and the service does not pass on any information about your matter without your consent, except where the disclosure of the information is necessary as required by the law.
