Subject outline
Students will explore the difference between live performance and screen acting through lectures, film screenings and small-group exercises with video cameras. Students will compare different approaches to screen acting, and analyse the effect of the star system on the idea of the modern self. They will do an in-depth study of a star performance of a public figure: e.g., Michelle Williams performing Marilyn Monroe, Anthony Hopkins performing Hitchcock, Natalie Portman performing Jackie Kennedy. We look at voice-acting in animation; green-screen acting in CGI films; acting styles in comedy, melodrama, horror and musicals. We explore the concept of affective performance, with students devising a live performance incorporating a music video and small screens. Students will develop small-group creative projects. No prior performance or production experience is required.

- Workshop exercises in small groups exploring key concepts covered in lectures. Devising creative ways to explore issues such as voice-acting, Computer Generated Performances and genre-specific styles of acting.

Lecture/WorkshopWeek: 10 - 22
Twelve 3.0 hours lecture/workshop per study period on weekdays during the day from week 10 to week 22 and delivered via face-to-face.
"Access to desktop computer, internet, USB inputs, good screen and sound playback with blackout windows and DVD player. Access to cameras and playback for workshops. Access to sound studio with tech support for 2x 2hour sessions."
