Subject outline

Students are introduced to the practical aspects of making a media product, from researching the current media market to develop a solid pitch for a new product, to executing the final design and delivery of the product. Along the way students are taught basic technical knowledge in design principles and editorial principles in order to deliver their product to industry standards. Students work in teams to create a mock-up magazine, moving from the basic concept to production using industry-standard software Adobe InDesign and Photoshop. Students are also given opportunities to develop and hone their writing, research, editing and sub-editing skills.

01. Demonstrate the capacity to devise and develop story ideas relevant to a particular brief or demographic.

Activities:
Students must submit at least two stories for assessment in their magazine, with key assessment criteria focusing on how their stories meet their overall magazine brief. Weekly lectures will be devoted to advanced writing and research skills and extensive feedback will be provided on assignments.

02. Write and edit different styles of news to deadline and to the standards required for professional publication.

Activities:

03. Research and critically analyse credible sources, including conducting interviews, and the ability to incorporate these sources into publishable work that meets industry standards.

Activities:
Weekly lectures introduce students to the kinds of information that will enable them to write, edit and design compelling stories. Weekly lectures will be devoted to advanced journalistic research skills and will be required to source interview subjects and locate appropriate archival sources in the writing of news and feature articles for assessment. This is reinforced through exercises in class and feedback on assessment tasks.

04. Work independently within an editorial team to produce a professional standard publication.

Activities:
Production of a magazine prototype; students will work in teams to produce a magazine proposal and then a final PDF of their magazine. The assessment for these elements will also include an element of self-reflection and peer assessment.

05. Develop and execute a sustainable product brief, based on research and critical analysis of the current media industry.

Activities:
Weekly lectures will introduce the landscape of the media industry, and the importance of a sustainable brief or business case for their media product. Students will use this information to drive their magazine brief assessment, where they must plan a brief for a unique media product.

06. Develop basic technical skills in industry standard software such as Adobe InDesign and Photoshop, and use these to produce a magazine publication that demonstrates an understanding of publishing principles, including layout and design principles and techniques.

Activities:
In weekly workshops students are introduced to the industry standard software used in the production of magazines, such as InDesign and Photoshop. In lectures they will also be exposed to elements that will guide their final production, such as layout principles and colour theory. Students will be assessed on their final product production, to be submitted as a PDF.
