Subject outline

Computer Aided Design (CAD) encompasses a variety of computer tools which enable engineers to design, simulate and model an engineered product. In addition, quite often the person that designs an object is not the same with the one that builds/manufactures it. Therefore, CAD drawings are the tool of communication between the designer and the manufacturer/builder. This subject develops understanding and problem-solving skills necessary to interpret and use CAD tools.

01. Apply engineering drawing terminology appropriately.

Activities:
Terminology introduced in the lectures and reinforced and practiced in the tutorials and laboratory classes. Students are required to demonstrate competency in correct use of terminology in written answers to questions and practical applications.

02. Identify the principles of laying out engineering CAD drawings.

Activities:
The principles of CAD drawing are introduced in lectures and reinforced during tutorials and practiced during the laboratory sessions. Students are required to demonstrate competency in applying these principles, to the satisfaction of the tutor/lecturer, in written answers to tests questions, laboratory tasks and in solving problems, including simple calculations related to practical applications.

03. Use the appropriate software to produce accurate drawings and analysis.

Activities:
The relevant software, and their tools and styles are introduced in lectures. Reinforcement and further exploration of these occurs in tutorials and during laboratory session. Students' competency in applying the relevant software tools and styles is assessed in tests questions and practical work.
