Subject outline
The subject provides both a framework for conceptualising close relationships (child, couple and family) and a focus on approaches to intervention for problems in these relationships. Theories will be outlined that have been developed to understand the complex dynamics inherent in close intimate relationships. In addition, the research methodology that has been used to assess relationship dynamics and functioning will be outlined and outcomes of research studies will be explored in depth. These initial lectures on theory and research will lay the ground work for further discussion of interventions that are often used by clinicians to target problems in relationships at the child, couple and family level. Clinical presentations of children, couples and families will be individually reviewed and interventions will be explored.

01. Explain the link between theory in psychology and practice as outlined in the scientist practitioner model through the use of case study analyses.

- Formative: The tutorial exercises will lead to the first case study. Formative and Summative: Development of case study one, leading to more independent evaluation of theory in case study two.
