Subject outline
This subject presents and contextualises the central themes and ideas in the writings of influential political thinkers from the seventeenth century onwards. It situates theories that are foundational to politics in their historical and cultural contexts. The focus is on ideas that have been the driving force behind key societal transformations in the modern period, involving absolute monarchy, constitutional government, mercantilism, free market capitalism, communism and social democracy. We also reflect on the continuing relevance of Western political thought for contexts outside the Western sphere. This is a 'block mode' subject held during the mid-year break.
