Subject outline

In this subject, students will apply and extend their understanding of foot and lower limb anatomy, and consolidate and build knowledge of pathogenesis, causal pathways, clinical presentation and management principles of common medical pathologies of relevance to clinical podiatric practice, including selected musculoskeletal, arterial and metabolic disorders. While serving to bridge previous studies in anatomy and pathology with subsequent podiatry theory subjects, this subject also prepares students for clinical practice through hands-on surface anatomy practical sessions and integration of illustrative case studies throughout the subject materials.

Prerequisites Must be enrolled in the Bachelor of Applied Science and Master of Podiatric Practice HZLLPP and must have passed HBS2ALF and HBS2PAT or equivalent. Other students wishing to enrol must request approval from the Subject Coordinator.

01. Identify and describe in detail the location and function of anatomical structures of the foot and ankle, and evaluate changes to anatomical structures occurring with musculoskeletal, arterial and metabolic disorders covered

02. Interpret and analyse pathophysiological changes and causal pathways for common musculoskeletal disorders of the foot and ankle and translate to clinical findings and management guidelines.

03. Interpret and analyse the pathophysiological changes and causal pathways for the common arterial disorder atherosclerosis, in relation to its effects on the heart, brain and peripheral vasculature, and translate to clinical findings and management guidelines.

04. Interpret and analyse the pathophysiological changes and causal pathways for relevant metabolic conditions such as diabetes and obesity, translate to clinical findings and management guidelines.

05. Use key principles of evidence-based practice to evaluate current knowledge of the pathology and management of the musculoskeletal, arterial and metabolic disorders and transmit to clinical scenarios.
