Subject outline
This subject considers two dimensions of the application of advanced counselling approaches to common mental health issues (eg. depression, anxiety, trauma) and complex case presentations. The first dimension will focus on evidence-based practice research, which will help you develop competence in validated approaches such as CBT, Interpersonal Therapies and Mindfulness in relation to working with mental health issues. A critical analysis of the limitations of an evidence-based approach will be considered and the importance of common factors will be explored. The second dimension will focus on advanced practice skills in working with individuals drawing attention to integration of theory in practice, working within the intersubjective field, impact of context and a structured time frame. It is assumed you have a working understanding of DSM 5/ICD 10 and some knowledge of a range of evidence based therapies and a solid theoretical and practical grasp of at least one evidence-based therapy.
