GONE BUSH: AUSTRALIAN IDENTITY AND RURAL MYTH

HUS3GBP

2017

Credit points: 15

Subject outline

Bush myths have played an important role in the construction of Australian identity despite the prominence of urban centralisation in the colonisation of Australia. Students in this subject examine how and why the Australian bush has been associated with mythic and authentic white Australian identities which were defined against the city and overlooked Aboriginal people. With a focus on both men and women#s experience, and on memoirs of childhood, Australian rurality is examined as a set of experiences and ideas produced, distributed and consumed in the bush and beyond. Students participate in site visits in the southwest Riverina and/or the Murray River Valley that link to the subject focus.
