Subject outline

Students undertake an engineering project on a topic relevant to their chosen field of specialisation. Typically projects will be undertaken by a small team of three to five students. The project is conducted over a semester and can either be industry based, that is, the project comes from industry but the work is not completed within the company, or university based, that is, a project developed by the Department of Engineering, or partnering organisation. The outcome of the investigation requires a team project report of 18,000 - 24,000 words in length, along with individual student blogs. Students will work to achieve the following Engineers Australia Stage 1 Competencies: 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 1.6, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, 3.2, 3.5 and 3.6 (see Engineers Australia Website for details).

01. Apply design and problem solving skills learnt during the course to create solutions to technical problems. Includes EA stage 1 competencies: 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 1.6, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4 and 3.6

Activities:
Students research their chosen project topic under the guidance of their supervisor. The groups ability to apply design and problem solving skills will be assessed through their written and oral work. Students are expected to propose multiple solutions to a given problem, and decide upon the best solution given a set of practical constraints. Students must then demonstrate good problem solving skills and use appropriate tools to implement their proposed solution and overcome technical challenges.

02. Demonstrate good organisational skills to achieve steady progress during the course of the project. Includes EA stage 1 competencies: 3.2, 3.5 and 3.6.

Activities:
Students must manage their time effectively to succeed in this subject. Supervisors give general direction at weekly meetings however it is up to the students to organise their day to day activities to make progress. Students are required to regularly submit an individual reflection/research journal for recording their day to day activities as well as a video blog to record their thoughts and progress throughout the semester.

03. Write a formal project plan and thesis using an appropriate technical language. Includes EA stage 1 competencies: 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 1.6, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, 3.2 and 3.6.

Activities:
Students submit a project plan which sets out the scope and goals of their project and the method by which they plan to achieve their goals. Students also submit a thesis which sets out the scope and goals of their project, the method by which they went about achieving their goals and the results of their work. The thesis includes full technical details of the work done during the project, including hardware and software design, simulation results, field tests etc. The thesis is also expected to include discussion of the problems encountered and the steps taken to solve these problems as well as recommendations for further work.

04. Present results of a technical project to an audience of peers using appropriate technical language. Includes EA stage 1 competencies: 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 1.6, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, 3.2, 3.5 and 3.6.

Activities:
Students will present a video blog to a group of their peers and to a group of supervising staff. This presentation describes the background to the project, the methods that are used, the progress to date, and the plan for completing the project. This presentation forms part of the assessment.
