Subject outline

In this subject you will build on the clinical skills attained previously in all areas of clinical practice pertaining to adult, adolescent and child patients. You will undertake two clinical placements in public dental facilities and one two week intensive teaching block on-campus. You will apply all therapeutic and preventive techniques learned previously in a guided clinical setting. You will further develop your treatment planning skills, and will provide patients with general restorative care, periodontal therapy and maintenance, paediatric dentistry, prosthodontics (fixed and removable) and permanent tooth removal. In addition you will commence straightforward endodontic cases and manage patients with special needs.

01. Evaluate and synthesise clinical information and patient oral health related needs to determine provisional and differential diagnoses

Activities:
Students will treat patients from a wide range of ages and backgrounds. Each patient will receive a thorough examination and appropriate diagnostic tests to formulate a diagnosis and differential diagnosis. Students will discuss and justify the differential diagnosis/diagnosis with their clinical supervisor.

02. Formulate and justify a comprehensive treatment plan, including where appropriate a referral plan, to meet patients oral health related needs.

Activities:
Based on their diagnoses, students will formulate comprehensive treatment plan for each patient. They will justify this plan to their clinical supervisors and to the patient or their parent/guardian.

03. Prescribe and execute a range of moderate to complex treatments related to a patient's oral health care needs including tooth restoration, periodontal therapy and maintenance, endodontic treatment, exodontia and removable and fixed prosthodontics.

Activities:
Students will undertake a variety of clinical procedures. Clinical teachers will supervise these procedures and provide feedback in the student's online clinical logbook. Students will self-reflect on their clinical performance. Throughout the year students will gain clinical competencies which will be recorded in the student log book.

04. Plan treatment and design, justify and fit effective removable prostheses for the replacement of missing teeth.

Students will provide partial and complete removable prostheses for patients with missing teeth

05. Evaluate the care that has been provided to patients using visual, radiographic, and periodontal examinations as well as other tools such as photographs and study models.

Activities:
Students will review patients who have received preventative and restorative oral health care and evaluate changes in their oral heath status .
