Subject outline

The subject New Documentary 4 explores contemporary modes of photographic practice that engage with theoretical and technical aspects that expand on the traditions of investigative visual culture. The assignments equip students with technical and conceptual methodologies to engage contemporary self-directed issues - be they small and personal or large-scale worldwide discussions - through varying lens-based techniques that are expanded on from New Documentary 1, 2 & 3. Importantly, New Documentary focuses on mediums that reflect and best convey visual stories. The subject is formatted to have a cross-campus itinerary that expands on student engagement with place and community in a globalised context. New Documentary 4 is a semester two third year subject where students generate their own subject matter for projects that lead to a folio. In semester two further consideration is given to presentation techniques that include folio, exhibition and online platforms.
