Visual & Material Culture 1 is a foundation of the interdisciplinary study of the diverse contemporary and historical practices in the creative arts. Students will engage in learning to develop informed and critical understandings of the historical, cultural and theoretical context for the creative arts practice. The subject introduces students to International Modernism and Modernity from the 19th century through to late 20th century. It explores issues such as political activism, the role of the artist, the impact of new technologies, psychoanalysis and spirituality. The development of analysis and evaluation capabilities of these complex issues is integral to contemporary creative arts practice and builds critical relationships in practitioner and academic contexts.
