Subject outline

Sociology tells the tales of modernity; it chases modernity's tail, as it is written after the fact. We generate our stories out of our experiences of collective life across time, place and culture. And these experiences are mediated by our worlds of print, audio-visual media, and the net. The social sciences had been formally organised for over a century now and in that time had developed a rich and complex repertoire of concepts and methods, arguments and narratives of global modernity, cross-cultural comparison and micro-studies of social behaviour. And yet the main global drive of modern life, knowledge and technological forces has a genealogy that is much longer and the consequences seem to be becoming faster, deeper, and more universal with each generation. What is modernity? What is happening to us? Where are we going from here? What can we know about ourselves, our life-worlds and our systems of organisation? And how can we know when we get there?
