TRANSTIBIAL PROSTHETIC EVIDENCE

POR5TTE

2016

Credit points: 15

Subject outline

In this subject, students gain knowledge of transtibial, ankle disarticulation and partial foot prosthetic evidence that underpins clinical practice. This will include the principles, treatment processes, clinical assessment, prescription considerations and a biomechanical basis of prosthetic management for amputations below the knee. Evidence based prosthetic treatment of various amputation levels are presented in the context of current clinical practice. This includes applied anatomy, pathology and biomechanics relevant to prosthetic management and interdisciplinary practice.

Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes

01. Critically evaluate clinical and research evidence of the aetiology and surgical management for transtibial amputations

Activities:
Students should be able to present logical well-evidenced arguments related to; a) common causes, incidence and types of amputation, b) anatomical structures affected by amputation and remnant residuum anatomy, c) describe early amputee rehabilitation treatment management, d) knowledge of health team member contribution to below knee amputee rehabilitation

02. Evaluate, investigate and justify prosthetic rehabilitation procedures for optimal treatment outcomes following transtibial amputation

Activities:
Students should be able to: a) describe a range of common socket designs, suspension systems, and their related treatment procedures used to treat transtibial and other below-knee amputees b) critically compare different treatment procedures used in the provision of transtibial ankle and partial foot prostheses. c) present a logical, well-evidenced or reasoned argument to explain selection of the best prosthetic treatment procedures for below-knee amputees.

03. Investigate, evaluate and analyse transtibial prosthetic:- gait deviations, alignment methods, alignment corrections and biomechanical functions of below knee prosthetic limbs.

Activities:
Students should be able to; a) recognise and describe below knee prosthetic gait deviations, b) describe bench, static and dynamic alignment procedures, c) explain biomechanical problems associated with prosthetic mal-alignments, d) outline the alignment requirements of prosthetic socket and foot components.

04. Critically analyse, evaluate and justify selection of components including prosthetic socket designs, materials and feet to meet the needs of a range of below knee amputees, based on available evidence of function.

Activities:
Students should be able to; a) identify critical features of below knee amputee activity level selection, b) construct prosthetic prescriptions using medical, environmental, recreational and personal information to meet the functional needs of amputees. c) justify arguments for the proposal of components and clinical treatments for below knee amputees, d) present logical, well-evidenced and reasoned arguments to provide detailed prosthetic prescription reports

05. Evaluate, reflect on and analyse the needs of amputees and prescribe prosthetic limbs for a variety of below knee amputees.
