POLITICS, PHILOSOPHY AND ECONOMICS
POL1PPE
2016
Credit points: 15
Subject outline
The first-half of semester focuses introducing, and developing your understanding of politics, philosophy and economics. There is a particular focus on exploring the strong interrelationships between politics, philosophy and economics (PPE). The second half of semester builds upon what we have learnt about the three disciplines by applying an explicitly PPE perspective to major questions of public policy such as environmental sustainability (including climate change), inequality, social stability and economic opportunity. This subject is of particular relevance to students enrolled in the Politics, Philosophy and Economics degree, but is open and accessible to any student who is interested in understanding these three disciplines, their interrelationships, and their application to real-world policy challenges. This subjectaddresses La Trobe's Sustainability Thinking Essential. Sustainability Thinkingentails deep appreciation of how the choices we make (including the intellectual choices we make when we analyse the world) affect the sustainability of natural, economic, social, political systems.
