Subject outline

Students complete a project that takes the equivalent of six months of continuous work under the supervision of a member of staff. The project is completed and written up as a thesis. All students are required to present a seminar outlining the proposed project at a time to be determined by the physics postgraduate coordinator. A list of prospective thesis topics and supervisors is available from the Department of Physics postgraduate co-ordinator.

Subject rules

Prerequisites All enrolments in this subject require the approval of the Department of Physics postgraduate co-ordinator. Current enrolment in M.Sci.Phys.Sci. program and an invitation to join the research stream. Students who achieve an average of 65% in all their units in the first year of the course and who demonstrate an aptitude for research and experimentation may be invited to join the research stream.

Special conditions This subject is a 60CP thesis program completed in one semester. It is recommended that students complete the masters thesis requirement over two semesters by enrolling in PHY5THA and PHY5THB. In special circumstances, for eg. international exchange students and students with an irregular course plan, enrolment may be permitted in PHY5THX and masters thesis requirements completed in one semester.

02. Communicate effectively the key concepts, techniques, and research outcomes associated research project in an appropriate scientific manner.

Activities:
Prepare and deliver an individual audio visual presentation of approximately 15 minutes in duration before an audience of scientists working in a relevant discipline, summarising the research project. Answer questions about the research project in a professional manner.
