This subject provides you with knowledge and skills to undertake nursing and midwifery research. Through lectures, online activities, and workshops you will examine the history and philosophy of nursing and midwifery science, develop the skills to conduct a literature review for research purposes, explore the ethics of research and be able to apply the appropriate research design and methods to specific clinical and social issues. This will enable you to identify a nursing or midwifery issue of clinical or research importance, formulate a research question and justify the design and methods to be used. To achieve the learning outcomes of this subject you will be expected to complete a range of written, verbal and clinical assessments within the 12-week period.

01. Describe the history and philosophy of science in relation to nursing and midwifery research: (a) introduction to the historical development of nursing research; (b) explore various research methods, approaches, findings and applications of nursing and midwifery research to practice.

Activities:
Workshop to discuss contemporary examples of nursing research. Online readings highlighting significant historical events in the development of nursing. Online examples of contemporary nursing research. Workshop to discuss the relationship between nursing research and nursing practice.

02. Compare and contrast the different research designs used in nursing research and public health to investigate chronic conditions, according to the Health Priorities areas across the lifespan: (a) examine different research designs including case-control studies, cohort studies, cross-sectional studies, experimental studies (RCTs); (b) critical appraisal and evidence-based public health practice.

Activities:
Online examples of contemporary nursing research highlighting different research designs. Workshop to explore and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of different research designs. Online web links to significant research agencies eg. NHMRC, ARC, VicHealth.

03. Distinguish the important elements of the research process: (a) identifying a research question; (b) selecting a research design; (c) understanding sampling methods; (d) identifying data analysis options; (e) describing research dissemination techniques; (f) exploring options for research translation in practice.

Online learning modules identifying each element of the research process from contemporary research examples.

04. Explain the ethical issues inherent in nursing and midwifery research: (a) understand the principles of ethical research; (b) discuss ethical considerations of a variety of research questions; (c) discuss ethical consideration of a variety of research findings.

Activities:
Online discussion forum to critique an assigned published research paper. Workshop to discuss ethical implications of a case scenario presented online.

05. Identify and search suitable databases for health research: (a) conduct a literature review that uses Boolean search strategies and keep a structure record; (b) transfer identified articles into an Endnote library; (c) identify significant health care databases.

Activities:
