Subject outline

In this subject, students will examine diagnostic classifications and formulations used in psychiatry. Students will be able to recognise and compare frameworks and models in mental health practice, including the principles of trauma informed care in service delivery. This subject will enable students to critically evaluate outcome measures and operational legislation and protocols in mental health. Students will examine evidence-based practice, mental health promotion and the prevention and early detection of mental illness. This subject enables students to develop critical thinking, problem solving, and effective communication skills for ethically oriented professional practice. Students will be able to make high level independent judgements; plan, implement and evaluate mental health practice and function effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team. The subject is delivered via a flexible online mode comprising learning modules via LMS and supported by clinical practicum.

01. Apply specialty knowledge and skills to clinical practice to the depth and extent required of a beginning mental health specialist.

Activities:
Clinical Practice. Students will be required to undertake clinical practice in a mental health setting under supervision of a preceptor or supervisor. Students will undertake a variety of activities such as utlising Pebble Pad to maintain a reflective journal which will be accessible to the subject coordinator, and/or the completion online quiz's via LMS to test knowledge base.

02. Communicate effectively & sensitively with colleagues, people accessing mental health services & the public in a variety of professional & social contexts in accordance with the ethical standards of the profession.

03. Critically analyse current knowledge, data and processes in mental health in order to inform your practice in a variety a contexts.

04. Critically evaluate and apply available evidence to inform best practice in mental health.

05. Perform effective independent work & work as an influential team member in a variety of situations within the mental health setting in accordance with the ethical standards of your profession
