Subject outline

Collaborative Journalism Project enables students to work with a partner media organisation on an investigative journalism. The specific project will be developed and designed through consultation between staff and students in the Journalism program and the partner news media organisation. Students will conduct research work and write on a topic under the direction of the subject co-oridnator and the partner organisation.

01. Conduct interviews with a range of people on diverse topics, developing their confidence to debate and question lecturers, fellow students and industry partners during seminars.

02. Develop an understanding of best practice investigative journalism through practical research and writing.

Activities:
Discussion and practical lessons in reporting ethically and maintaining professional ethics in interview situations. This will involve working with the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance's Code of Conduct.

03. Devise original ideas, finding compelling news angles for stories and dealing with problems that arise during investigative projects, help to formulate ideas in collaboration other students.

Devising strategies for getting around dead-ends; what to do when interview subjects won't answer questions or return calls; extracting news from a mass of data

04. Engage with media organisations and worked with a media organisation on a investigative research project to develop widely transferrable writing, research and collaborative skills.

Activities:
Opportunities to develop contact with personnel from the participating industry partner and develop writing, research and interview skills that can be transferred to other life contexts.

05. Participate in a team-based investigative reporting project with an industry partner to practise team-based writing and editing skils, play a leadership role in team-based activities.

Activities:
Working in a team environment on a team investigation — including editors and reporters from the particpating industry partner

06. Practise and advance their writing skills through opportunities to undertake commentary writing and investigative long-form journalism.
