Activities:

Students will be taught that not all aports commentary is for the broadcast mediums. They will be assessed on their ability to distinguish between opinion and analysis in print and between play by play commentary and analysis in sporting broadcasts. Within the broadcast environment there are also different styles, such as entertainment versus journalistic. Students will be given a multimedia quiz that will ask them to recount the different forms of sports commentary.

02. Work collaboratively in a group to produce an academic written assignment on the history of sports commentary in Australia and how technology has impacted the craft. Students will also work together to give an oral presentation that demonstrates an understanding of the different styles of broadcast commentary.

Activities:

Students will work in small groups to research the first forms of sports commentary broadcast and written in Australia (not just Victoria). They will be assessed on a written document jointly produced and on an oral presentation given by all members of the group. Students use their own voice to relay the different styles rather than simply republishing archival material.

03. Identify, analyse and evaluate how sports commentary in Australia differs from that practiced in other nations around the world.

Activities:

Students will listen to and watch examples of at least three sports that are popular around the world. They will learn that the definition of 'good commentary' has some common elements around the globe, such as accuracy, but also some subjective elements, such as 'when to talk'. They will learn the different preferences each country has for style, content and entertainment and the relationship between these. Students will be given television footage of a sporting event, without commentary, and will be assessed on their ability to provide commentary that demonstrates an appreciation of the different approach to commentary in a designated overseas country. 04. Identify and discuss how the commercial relationships events and media outlets enter into, impacts on the nature of sports commentary. Recall what ethical issues need to be considered by commentators in the commercial realm.

Activities:

Students will learn what 'Boosterism' is; the type of requests they can expect to be made of them as commentators in the commercial environment; and the ethics of endorsing a product or event. Students will be invited to discuss as a tutorial group the issues surrounding commentary in the commercial environment. The discussion will inform an opinion piece that will be submitted for assessment.

05. Learn, recognise and begin to execute the fundamentals of broadcast sports commentary

Activities:

Students will be taught the broad fundamentals of sports broadcast commentary. They will identify those elements in past and present practitioners and have the opportunity to submit for assessment their own broadcast commentary. Students will also have the opportunity to receive feedback from their peers.
