Credit points: 15

This subject addresses La Trobe's Sustainability Thinking Essential. Sustainability Thinking entails deep appreciation of how the choices we make affects the natural, economic, social, political and cultural systems — now and in the future.

Subject outline

All societies have stories from their past. Concepts like "myth" and "legend" help us differentiate them from fiction and to understand how particular stories relate to actual events in history. In this subject, we study some well-known stories like those of King Arthur and the knights of the Round Table, Robin Hood, Pocahontas, Achilles, Helen and the Trojan War. We consider the evidence for their origins in oral and written texts, material objects, and artworks, and trace their endurance into the modern world. We examine how links are made between stories from the past, and the writing of history today.
