The auditory and vestibular systems develop early during embryonic life. The development is governed by genetic factors, as well as environmental, and individual considerations. The second part of the subject will address the epidemiology of hearing and balance pathology. The information will be essential for audiologists engaging in hearing and balance assessment and management.

01. The basic principles of the embryology of the audio-vestibular system. You will be able to: a. Understand the basics of the embryology of conception and the early development of the embryo; b. Understand the formation of the otic capsule and the differentiation of the audio-vestibular system.

Understand the basic principles of the human DNA, chromosomes and the rules of inheritance; b. Recognise the causes of genetic, congenital and developmental hearing loss at an introductory level; c. Understand the genetics of balance and equilibrium in early life.

03. The epidemiological data on hearing loss and balance problems. You will be able to: a. Understand the principles of epidemiology and distribution of hearing loss in the population; b. Recognise the burden of tinnitus in the population; c. Understand the distribution of balance problems in the population.
